Middle School Program

Our Middle School Program provides a comprehensive, evidence-based learning program that works closely with schools to provide year-round, out-of-school learning with a structured daily curriculum to enhance learning that begins during the school day.

We specialize in afterschool programs, summer programs, responsive family engagement, and scholar travel opportunities.

Key elements of our program include:

Academic Learning and Social-emotional Learning

We know that strong academic and interpersonal skills are built a little at a time, day by day, throughout childhood and beyond. We support this steady growth with consistent tools that are proven to facilitate learning.

To support math and literacy development, we utilize Stride Academy, an award-winning software that adapts to student input to provide personalized math and literacy instruction to our scholars.

To support social emotional learning, we implement 7 Mindsets, a research-based, online platform that provides age-appropriate social-emotional learning curriculum that fosters meaningful relationships and interpersonal problem-solving in the classroom.

Hands-on, Project-based Learning

Out-of-school time is different from the school day. Our approach to learning is more flexible than a traditional classroom environment and embraces non-traditional learning styles. Because all scholars learn differently, we seek to provide a diversity of learning experiences to give all scholars an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to shine.

Hands-on, project-based learning is ideal for out-of-school time because it allows scholars to collaborate and learn at the pace that best suits them. It also provides scholars with a say in what projects the group may undertake and brings focus to topics that pique their interests and passions.

Monthly Programming Themes

Each month, ODA focuses on a new theme that strengthens skills and builds knowledge for the future success of our scholars. Here is a taste of what an ODA scholar experiences in a school year:

Homework Help and Tutoring

We partner with teachers to keep track of our scholars’ academic progress. We set aside time during our programs for homework completion and provide tutors for extra learning support.

Family Engagement

Our Family Program is one of the most unique parts of ODA. Whether it’s a workshop about financial literacy or cheering on their child at the International Festival, family engagement is the essential ingredient to our success and to the success of our scholars.

ODA hosts year-round family workshops and events to support the connection between home and school. We equip families with the tools needed to serve as lifelong advocates for their child’s scholastic journey and infuse fun and community building along the way.

Our Family Program team also provides wraparound support by connecting families with local service providers that specialize in areas such as housing, food stability, workforce development, legal support, mental health, tutoring, and more.

Travel Opportunities

Seeing new places and experiencing new ideas is crucial in the development of middle school scholars. We take our scholars on field trips both for learning and for fun. We know that these experiences are important learning milestones and precious memories for young children. As a scholar in ODA, you might travel to a place like an organic farm or the Museum of Natural History. We always seek to involve our scholars in the decision-making about where we might go explore!

Summer Camp

Any scholars enrolled in ODA during the academic year are eligible to participate in our summer programs. Our middle school summer programs are designed to offer a “deep dive” into a topic that is not possible to study during the academic year, such as film or the culinary arts. Our middle school scholars get a glimpse into new ideas, potential careers, and eye-opening skills sets that could change their future and inspire them to reach new goals.

College and Career Exposure

Starting in middle school, ODA identifies opportunities to expose scholars to various postsecondary options. We may do research projects about a certain university or host a guest speaker from a specific industry to talk about their career trajectory. Our goal is to find ways to connect postsecondary options with our scholars so they see themselves in these roles after high school graduation.
