10th grader Kennis James Shelley is a student at Max Hayes High School and has been part of Open Doors Academy for two years. As an ODA scholar, Kennis has improved his academic performance, built strong relationships, and explored his passion for welding. In our conversation, Kennis shared how ODA has positively impacted his education and personal growth, and what he's looking forward to in the future.
Thanks for speaking with us today. What’s your experience been with ODA?
Really good. I've done a lot of fun activities like field trips to colleges and tutoring. Before I joined ODA, my grades weren’t the best, but the program has really helped improve them. That's why I always tell people about it.
That’s great to hear! And your passion showed during the summer. Can you tell us about your summer internship with us?
I worked in operations, so I was involved in a little bit of everything. We got a chance to help campers, build things, and deliver packages of materials to the classrooms.
Did the internship help prepare you for the future?
Definitely. It made me realize how important it is to help others. I was delivering packages and building relationships with the kids at the same time.
That’s great. And now you’re back at school, what’s your main focus?
I’m studying welding.
What made you choose that?
My dad’s side of the family is mostly involved in trades—welding, construction, things like that—so it just felt natural.
Do you see a connection between welding and your internship?
Oh yeah. For both, it’s really important to stay organized and be prepared.
So, what are your other priorities this school year?
I’m focused on school – improving my grades and helping others. And I’m spreading the word about ODA. I'm also looking forward to finding a college that’s a good fit for me.
You mentioned going on college tours earlier with ODA. Where did you go?
We went to Tennessee to visit different colleges—both private and public. My favorite part was meeting new people in ODA from other schools. We all connected during the long bus rides.
I also heard you tried some really spicy chicken during one of those trips!
Oh yeah, I was sweating a bit, but I was fine! The chicken was from Hattie B’s, and it was the best! I’d definitely go back for more. We also visited Ohio University in Athens during their International Festival. The campus had so many cool things to see.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?
There’s so much I could say! I really wish ODA had been available in my middle school. I heard about it when I started high school, and it’s been an amazing experience. I hope I can continue with ODA throughout high school.
That’s great! Thanks for speaking with us, Kennis!
