This month, Heaven Malcolm, a sophomore at Garrett Morgan High School, wrote about her experiences with ODA. We hope her words inspire you as much as she continues to inspire us.
Dear ODA families and friends,
My name is Heaven Malcolm. I am a sophomore at Garrett Morgan High School. I have been with Open Doors Academy for two years.
ODA has helped me in so many ways as an individual – they’ve helped me come out of my shell, supported my passion about becoming a musician, and given me my first real job experience.
ODA has given me many great opportunities. I competed in a Pitch Challenge, where I pitched a business idea called “In Our Mind Apparel” to a panel of judges, visited various colleges as I thought about my next steps, participated in community service, visited career fairs, and so much more.
I am planning to go to college as a Criminal Justice major. I currently have my heart set on attending Columbia University for either Music Performance or Criminology, and ODA has encouraged me as I consider the path ahead. With the support of the amazing mentors here at Open Doors Academy, I have been pushing myself to be the best me I can be.
I plan to continue with ODA until I graduate high school. Every day is a new adventure here, and you always have a great time with Open Doors Academy.
I hope you enjoy the rest of this newsletter as much as I enjoy ODA!
