For Tekia Lawson, Open Doors Academy has been part of her daughter Ki'Yanni McCall’s life since kindergarten. Now in sixth grade at Breakthrough’s Glenville Campus, Ki'Yanni continues to thrive in a program where she finds academic support, consistency, and joy.
“I love the afterschool program where she does her homework,” Tekia said. “It helps her to study.”
As a working parent, Tekia values the structure and care ODA offers. But for her family, it’s more than just support – it’s excitement. From holiday parties to spelling bees, ODA’s family events have become a highlight. “They go all out,” Tekia shared. “It gets better every year.”
At a recent ODA Spelling Bee, Ki'Yanni took first place among all sixth-grade participants. “It was great to be part of another family event that ODA put on,” Tekia said proudly.
“ODA is something she looks forward to,” Tekia added. “She doesn’t like it when she doesn’t have it.”
What’s the buzz about Spelling Bees?
Spelling instruction boosts vocabulary, reading fluency, and word recognition - critical factors in reading success.
Spelling bees build excitement around words while reinforcing memory, focus, and confidence.
We’re grateful to walk alongside families like Tekia and Ki'Yanni, and proud to provide a community where scholars grow, families connect, and futures take shape.
