“Free speech is an important topic because everybody has the right to free speech,” said LaMarcus Idom, a senior at Max S. Hayes High School and proud Open Doors Academy scholar.

This spring, LaMarcus entered the 2025 Hope and Stanley Adelstein Free Speech Essay Contest, hosted by the City Club of Cleveland. With encouragement from his ODA advisor, Cece, and support from his school community, LaMarcus submitted an essay titled “Protest Provides Us a Platform.” His thoughtful reflection earned him a top prize—and the chance to read his essay aloud at the City Club.

“I feel better now that I read it out loud,” LaMarcus shared after his presentation. “I feel like I should’ve never been that nervous.”

Reflecting on the topic, he added: “Some people get disrespected and they feel like they don’t have rights. I really hadn’t thought about free speech before this, but this opportunity made me learn that I am a good writer, and I have the potential to write.”

Opportunities like this give scholars space to lead, grow, and discover their voices. LaMarcus reminded us all how powerful the student voice can be—when it's heard, encouraged, and celebrated.

We’re so proud of LaMarcus!
