What does it look like to prepare a young person for life after high school – not just academically, but personally and professionally?
In late May, a group of ODA high school scholars found answers during a multi-day service-learning trip to Bowling Green State University.
Scholars tasted college life as they stayed in campus dorms and ate in college dining halls.
They volunteered at the BGSU Donation Center, helping to sort and prepare items for families in need.
One of our scholars, Bruce, shared:
"I always wanted to work behind the scenes and get everything prepared for other people to get their clothes, shoes, or toys. It was nice to see that everybody who participated came together and worked together to help give out clothes and shoes to the community."
Beyond the donation center, scholars lent their hands at local farms and took part in science lab activities. Every evening, they came together to reflect on what they had learned and how they showed up for others.
For scholar Amyra, the experience was especially meaningful:
"My favorite part about visiting Bowling Green was staying on campus because I've always wanted to experience living in a dorm. Since I'm going to a community college, I won't be able to have that opportunity."
We're grateful to the entire BGSU team for hosting our scholars and helping create a space for service and growth.
