Once again, our friends from St. Paul’s sat helped our elementary scholars grow their love of reading.
Volunteers from the congregation of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights – where Open Doors Academy started in 1992 - encouraged and guided scholars as read through chapter books, asking questions and improving comprehension as they went.
In the library at Archbishop Lyke School, our summer camp home this year, scholars were surrounded by shelves filled with different genres.
Fourth grader Armani shared that she was interested in everything from Adventure to Animals to Fantasy. With so many choices, scholars sorted through books about princesses, bugs, outer space, and much more.
“I already have my next pick: Spiderman,” she said as she leapt up from her seat. It was clear reading meant falling love with words for Armani.
Betsy Hockey, volunteer and ODA board member, shared, “the scholars’ excitement was contagious as they finished a book and got to pick a new one.”
We’re so grateful to St. Paul’s for their time and their dedication to our scholars. Their consistency continues to positively impact our kids – each year, scholars finish more pages, build greater confidence in reading, and fall more deeply in love with language.
