What’s better than creating your own story? That’s exactly what our Cleveland summer camp fourth grade scholars did with Taft volunteers.
Guided by Miss Melissa from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, scholars identified adjectives, nouns, and verbs, then worked with their Taft buddy to write stories.
With some guidance from our volunteers, one scholar’s first draft evolved from “My smelly dog ate the food out of the garbage” to “My black dog ate the lasagna out of the garbage because I left the trash out.”
Creative writing begins with reading comprehension, which takes time. When we build on that and walk our scholars through the “why,” growth is inevitable. Thanks to Taft and Miss Melissa, our scholars learned the power of perseverance, the importance of vocabulary, and the essential role of editing.
Our volunteers’ support didn’t stop after storytelling, however. They spent time in a different role... From helping our scholars open milk cartons to mopping the floor after lunch, they got the full summer camp experience!
