“When students discover a passion early, they can deepen it through classes and activities, setting them up to excel in future studies and careers,” said Jack D’Cruz, senior at University School and member of Intersect STEM.
That belief drives Intersect STEM, a student-led organization, started at University School that has partnered with ODA to make science fun, hands-on, and
Recently, Intersect STEM members Jack, Sebastian, and Sahas made colorful lava lamps with our Breakthrough Midtown fourth graders. Scholars mixed oil, water, food coloring, and Alka-Seltzer tablets, watching them bubble and swirl.
“I learned that combining those ingredients makes a really cool reaction with beautiful colors,” said ODA scholar, Ryanne, one of our scholars.
“Every visit to ODA, I’m inspired by how eager the scholars are to learn,” said Jack. “Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and collaborative spirit make our lessons exciting and remind me why I love sharing science.”
By making lava lamps and exploring non-Newtonian fluids, Intersect STEM is helping ODA scholars realize that science is something you do and question not just something you read about in a textbook.
Thanks to partners like Intersect STEM, our scholars are growing more confident in asking questions and exploring new ideas.
