The path to college becomes clearer when scholars can see the destination.
On a recent trip to Washington, D.C., high school scholars explored college campuses and experienced what life studying in the nation’s capital might look like.
As they navigated campuses and city streets, scholars began to see how academic and personal paths come together in a new environment.
“I learned how college life is, and how you’re never by yourself – everyone is always together; it’s more of a community. With all of the buildings together, you can build relationships,” shared Christopher, an 11th grade scholar from Cleveland Heights.
For Harmony, the experience reinforced the importance of access and exposure.
“Being able to travel with ODA gives me a better look at options outside of Cleveland,” she said.
Scholars visited campuses including Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Howard University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. They also explored the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Mall.
Experiences like this are a critical part of how Open Doors Academy prepares scholars for life after high school. By connecting them to college campuses and new cities, scholars begin to see what’s possible for their future.
We are grateful to the supporters and partners who make opportunities like this possible.
