“That was the first time he’s ever been proud of something he wrote,” Chelon Pleasure said.
Her son, Anthony, had just participated in The City Club of Cleveland’s High School Essay Contest, winning second place with an essay about artificial intelligence. Writing had never been something he gravitated toward, but this time was different.
“He wasn’t confident in his writing before, but he was so excited,” Chelon said. “He even won prize.”
The moment stood out.
“I was like, ‘Really? You didn’t have to push him to do it?’ And his coordinator said no. That meant a lot.”
That marked a shift.
“My child went from being one of the kids who would shy away from things to someone his coordinator now uses as an example for others.”
Over the past three years, Open Doors Academy has been a steady presence in Anthony’s life. What began as extra support has become something more consistent — a place where he is showing up differently, both in school and at home.
Chelon has seen that change clearly. His grades have improved, and his behavior reflects a new level of maturity.
That impact extends beyond the classroom. From afterschool support to summer programming, Chelon sees the difference it makes for her family.
“Summer camp is awesome. They love it. The siblings love it too,” she said. “I wish ODA was in all schools.”
As a working parent, she also values the stability the program provides.
“It gives me more flexibility and helps with our schedule.”
After three years, Chelon sees the difference in the way her son shows up — more willing, more engaged, and proud of what he can do.
