A mock interview helped AAA volunteer Minerva Cabrera Pierce connect with an ODA scholar—and showed how a simple conversation can create lasting impact.
When AAA volunteer Minerva Cabrera Pierce thinks about her experiences with Open Doors Academy, one memory immediately comes to mind.
A few years ago, she conducted a mock interview with one of our high school scholars. The scholar spoke Spanish, and the two quickly discovered they shared something else in common: they were both born in the same country.
“That was really nice because obviously we connected just about the fact that we both speak Spanish,” Minerva recalled.
As they worked through common interview questions, Minerva shared guidance on what prospective employers look for.
“Even though he was shy, I felt like he did take away things that he could use in the future,” she said.
Together, they discussed how to answer common interview questions and present themselves professionally.
“This was teaching him, coaching him on how he could handle those questions if he’s ever in an interview. That was really cool because it was one-on-one. It was more personal.”
Since then, Minerva has continued to support ODA scholars in many ways. She has attended the Entrepreneur Showcase, volunteered at the International Festival, and recently helped prepare summer camp spaces for hundreds of scholars.
Why does she keep coming back?
“I love what you guys do,” she said. “Working with kids, I think it’s amazing.”
She also appreciates the welcoming environment she finds each time she volunteers.
“I almost feel like I’m family,” she said. “When I come in, I get hugged. It’s just very welcoming.”
And when a new volunteer opportunity appears in her inbox?
“Any time I hear ODA, if I’m able to, sign me up.”
