“I see problems in my community, and I think I can play a role in solving them.”
That's how State Representative Tristan Rader (D-13) described what first inspired him to pursue public service during a recent conversation with Open Doors Academy's high school interns.
Hosted at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the discussion brought together State Senator Kent Smith (D-21) and State Representatives Juanita Brent (D-18), Eric Synenberg (D-21), and Tristan Rader (D-13) for an open conversation about leadership, education, and public service.
The interns came prepared with questions about career pathways, public service, and how leaders make decisions that affect young people. They also advocated for more career exploration opportunities and workforce training programs for young people.
The conversation centered on leadership and service. Legislators encouraged scholars to take advantage of opportunities available through organizations like Open Doors Academy, Youth Opportunities Unlimited, and other community partners while continuing to seek out new ways to grow, learn, and lead.
Senator Smith left scholars with a reminder that leadership is more accessible than many people realize.
“The barrier to entry is very low for being in public office,” he said.
For ODA's interns, the conversation was an opportunity to ask thoughtful questions, hear directly from community leaders, and see that leadership begins with getting involved, speaking up, and working to make a difference.
