Our High School Program provides a comprehensive, evidence-based learning program that works closely with schools to provide year-round, out-of-school learning with a structured daily curriculum to enhance learning that begins during the school day. We specialize in afterschool programs, summer programs, responsive family engagement, and scholar travel opportunities.
Key elements of our program include:
We know that strong academic and interpersonal skills are built a little at a time, day by day, throughout childhood and beyond. We foster this steady growth with consistent focus and support.
We partner with teachers to keep track of our scholars’ academic progress. We set aside time during our programs for homework completion and provide tutors for extra learning support.
Out-of-school time is different from the school day. Our approach to learning is more flexible than a traditional classroom environment and embraces non-traditional learning styles. Because all scholars learn differently, we seek to provide a diversity of learning experiences to give all scholars an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to shine.
Hands-on, project-based learning is ideal for out-of-school time because it allows scholars to collaborate and learn at the pace that best suits them. It also provides scholars with a say in what projects the group may undertake and brings focus to topics that pique their interests and passions.
Each month, ODA focuses on a new theme that strengthens skills and builds knowledge for the future success of our scholars. Here is a taste of what an ODA scholar experiences in a school year:
Our Family Program is one of the most unique parts of ODA. Whether it’s a workshop about financial literacy or cheering on their child at the International Festival, family engagement is the essential ingredient to our success and to the success of our scholars.
ODA hosts year-round family workshops and events to support the connection between home and school. We equip families with the tools needed to serve as lifelong advocates for their child’s scholastic journey and infuse fun and community building along the way with engaging activities for the whole family.
Our Family Program team also provides wraparound support by connecting families with local service providers that specialize in areas such as housing, food stability, workforce development, legal support, mental health, tutoring, and more.
Seeing new places and experiencing new ideas is crucial in the development of high school scholars. We take our scholars on field trips both for learning and for fun. We know that these experiences are important learning milestones and precious memories for our scholars. As a high school scholar in ODA, you might travel to Howard University on a college trip, to a community farm to volunteer, or to a local makerspace to learn about rapid prototyping. We always seek to involve our scholars in the decision-making about where we might go explore!
ODA has a commitment to taking kids beyond their zip code, their city, and their state. In the past, they have taken kids abroad to broaden their horizons. There is a difference between knowledge and understanding and ODA is really striving to help kids in that understanding phase which comes through exposure. - Anshawn Ivery, Principal, Garrett Morgan School of Leadership and Innovation
Our high school summer programs are open to currently enrolled ODA scholars at high school programs.
ODA’s high school summer program is rooted in college and career exploration and experiential learning. Scholars research colleges and careers, build resumes, practice public speaking and presentation skills, and work as paid interns in our K-8 summer camp. We also go on a variety of college visits and field trips and end summer with a week-long service-learning trip.
